Tufted or 'secondary' backed carpets are, generally, cheaper than conventional woven carpets, such as Axminsters or Wiltons.
During the construction of tufted carpet, the surface, or pile is woven on the loom, then the backing, ranging from hessian to a relatively newer type, 'action back', is adhered.

This method isn't as strong as a conventional Wilton or Axminster, whereas both the pile and the backing are woven together at manufacture.

Neither is tufted as strong as bonded carpets, which has the pile and the backing heat-set together!

Even so, tufted is a very hard wearing cloth, some manufactured to heavy contract grade.
Generally cheaper, due largely to its construction, there is a huge selection both in colour and design.
