There are four basic smoothing compounds on the market;
This can be used over most floors without any problem, but is not self levelling and therefore more awkward to use for the DIY enthusiast. Used mainly by profesionals that need a fexible levelling compound.
This is a very good levelling compound. Dries hard. Downside is that it does not flow very well and is hard to smooth when dry.
This is also very good. Flows very well and is really hard when dry. Downside is that it does not like moisture in subfloor base and tends to break up if subfloor has some flexibility.
Fibre Bonded (waterbased)
The same as water based but better! Designed to go over floors that flex. Even floor boards!
You should start by finding out if you have a damp proof membrane and if your floor moisture content is within British Standard of 75% Relative Humidity. This will make a big difference to the product you use. Use a specialist damp meter to test the RH content. Water based compound should not be used if RH is above 75% and the same for most floor coverings ie wood, amtico, karndean, lino etc. You also need to make sure the subfloor, whether it is concrete, tiles, quarry etc is stable and sound?
If RH is below 75% or you have a working dpm;
- Clean the floor from contaminates (polish etc). Next, take a large straight edge and go over floor and mark out any major low or high spots. High spots should be grinded down (will save on compound) and low spots should be filled with 400 repair mortar, (there will be a link at the end for where to get all products from). Try to get all repairs within 3mm per meter run out. Fill in any cracks/holes etc with mortar
- Prime with P131 neoprene primer. Use neat on non absorbent floors and diluted with clean cold water (approx 1 to 4) on absorbent bases. Always follow Manufacturer recommendations.
- Choose your screed. I would always recommend latex based unless the base is concrete and you wish to save money?
- Make sure you mix the contents as advised. Stir with electric whisk until lump free, then carefully pour onto floor. Trowel as flat as you can, trying to get it as level as possible. Work farthest from and out of the door.
- Make yourself a cup of tea or grab a beer and put the TV on!
